What a great beginner project! You can learn to knit right now without buying anything!
This YouTube channel called ‘Knitting Science & Craft’ has been very helpful at teaching people how to knit with pencils but what can you make?
I would say make wash cloths. This is a great first project. You can use packing string if you have it already. Try Dollar Tree Cotton Yarn. You can make the whole wash cloth in garter stitch which is knit stitch only. Start washing your dishes with cotton wash cloths. It’s OK if they don’t look great at first. The usual first project is a scarf but I am too clumsy to wear a scarf and they always fall off or get caught in door knobs. Plus I remember getting bored quickly and my hand started hurting because I was using hand muscles I usually don’t use when I crocheted.
I would use clear nail polish for the tips. The pencils have a slicker surface for the stitches to slide on. I’ve tried chopsticks but they taper from thin to thick and the cheap chopsticks have a rough surface so the stitches won’t move.
Here is an article from All Free Knitting. There is a lot of pop up ads so I usually don’t get my patterns from there but it wasn’t so bad when I clicked on this article about knitting with pencils.
If you are looking for free patterns try these three online companies. They have so many!
I already did some research for you for the easiest pattern that I can find:
