Vintage Knitting Needles

Happy Mother’s Day! It’s May 12th on Sunday today. I was doing some late night knitting yesterday when I stopped on looked online to curiously see what yarn that was made in the USA looks like. So expensive! The tools were so expensive, too. I mostly have knitting needles in every size. This includes my vintage knitting needles. Many were made in the USA! Pretty cool. Yes, you can still get them pretty easily from eBay and elsewhere. So I thought I would use them to make some swatches. I didn’t feel guilt about using them like I did with newer ones because these were old and given to me as a gift from my mom. I always feel like I am part of some historic event using the same tools as our grandmothers and great grandmothers did in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. It is an awesome feeling. They are usually made well and I am giving life to them again. This is reusing things and keeping them out of the landfill. It is saving money and giving extra cash to someone who understands the value of what knitting is and instead sells them or gives them away instead of throwing them away like trash.

I’ve been practicing only knitting with single pointed or double pointed needles and I think I like them even more! Garments usually don’t get heavy because I am knitting garments in pieces. I learned how to sew pieces in an easier way and things fit better when done in pieces. I have been using double points for a long time and I know how to avoid gappy “ladders”.

What about you? Do you like vintage knitting needles as well?
